It’s Monday … Is it off to Work? … Or an Opportunity to Serve Others? ... Made a Difference to This One!

Every human being enters into a barrage … a sea of thoughts as we awake and prepare to go to work on Mondays. A few love it … perhaps more see it as a routine … and some may even dread it. All are understandable … thoughts we have in common.

I had the opportunity to work for Walmart as an associate, then promoted to management, and then to a corporate-based position; eventually in remodeling and expanding stores. Upon arrival each day I would see and meet with folks and ask employees how it was going. Not surprisingly, an overly used and common reply would be: “Well … I’m here!” To which I’d often reply: “Come on … we can do better than that. Right?” And … I might add from time-to-time: “You know … this job does not define us … who we are …”

That very topic was the main theme of a short novel I wrote in 2016 entitled “Starfish: The Evolution of People at Work; which is an eBook about rewriting your story about WHY you go to work each day. It’s about changing your JOB into a Mission with purpose and meaning which changes the lives of your co-workers and customers. Set in a fictional Walmart Lawn & Garden department, the mysterious, monk-like main character Jax changes the store, his co-workers and customers forever. StarFish engages you with easy to remember stories that you can integrate into your daily life at work and home.”

The fictional novel was inspired by this video I’d watched while on the road after coming home from a job.:

And the same theme is presented by Jamie Winship in this more recent video which challenges each of us about our thoughts we each carry into our vocation … on Monday mornings … and throughout the week. Some say “being informs doing”. So let’s ask ourselves … is this work defined by the way the world values it? … or is today an opportunity to serve others? … bringing the love of God into every place and relationship where we place our feet? Yes! It’s a choice.
